I think that you made an important point about the influence of the history of the time period on Rulfo's novel. The Mexican Revolution and the Cristero War had a big impact on the Mexican people, especially those living in rural towns. Rulfo has a way of making those events seem so real in the lives of the characters in the novel. Don't you just love the image of an abandoned town filled with souls of the dead sharing their stories with Juan Preciado? I think that Rulfo made Comala seem so real that I truly believed that the souls were sharing their suffering with us.I have read the novel twice now and I would like to read it again to get a full appreciation of it. Rulfo's language is so rich in Spanish with the use of Mexican coloquialisms. I think that makes the novel even more realistic.

I like your association of the concept of order and "trusting in the human condition." Hamm and Clov are indeed slaves to their daily rituals, and the need for order is perhaps due to the fact that life's events appear to be so random at times that if we do not impose order on our world, it appears to be bleak and hopeless at times.

Thank you for the insight that Beckett was a moral realist. I enjoyed your post. I also saw the dependence of Hamm and Clov as important. Neither one could be without the other. Clov was Hamm's eyes and Hamm was Clov's livelihood, as he had nowhere to go and nothing else to do except serve him. With your insight, it seems that Beckett could have been saying we need to rely on each other instead of God.

Very well expressed. I especially like your concluding comment, "it is important that we do not fight each other because in this way we can open the door for the stranger."

I liked how you said it....religion is man made (and don't forget woman made but we traditionally think of men). Only the human race could have screwed up beautiful teachings and causes/principles with a laundry list of do not do this, do this every week, or do this once a month, etc......The Enlightenment thinkers were so correct in their insistence to move away from dogmatic teachings and blind faith.

Good summary of the Englightenment. I especially like your sentence "reasoning is the powerful way to use common sense." I think that sums it up quite well.
